The above scenario pretty much played out like that for me on New Years Day from 5:00 am to about 7:30 am when I was finally taken back to a ER triage (this was not the result of drinking, but a kidney stone, that at this point and time still enjoys my body as it's playground). The "who are you" and lost paperwork did happen and though what Tombs said, is the first thing that popped into my head, cooler heads prevailed. The best part is that the whole situation fit right into the scheme of the story, ya can't ask for anything better than that (well actually you could).

Was watching a lot of Hong Kong movies when this came into my head-wanted to try to tell a story in a unfamiliar language not just pictures(though the pictures do have to tell the story). Again there are parts I like and dislike, I seem to remember not feeling the issue was strong enough hence the appearance of the Ace and Martin 10 dollar recipe, and the bonus Pin-up of Doctor Str...I..uh..mean Mysto. Looking at it again, I think I like it better now then when I put it out-go figure.

GIANT MONSTER 1..Two weeks

It vs. Planty-on oil 2006

First Giant Monster Painting, the source material for all the Giant Monster paintings is a group of drawings I did in 3rd and 4th grade, which I then put together in a binder and put away a long time ago. Unearthed many years later, and the light bulb pops on, after 3 paintings it seems to me the billboards are what are becoming more interesting(to me at least).

Two weeks will see the return of 80 Proof, going to start out with a primer of sorts reintroducing characters and a recap of the blog. All the material will be new, and then a month later will begin the new ride. Enjoy.

The Last Old One Before the New Ones (or A Big Long One(20 pages long)), and ...If It Wasn't...So here's the plan

2005/06 Lindsay Lohan wasn't quite the train wreck she is now but her spiral downward probably started around this time. But that is the redhead Martin is talking about in this issue and he pretty much called it. I won't go into the the other women he's talking about, and No I haven't read any Harry Potter so I don't know if HP has the hots for that chick in the book or not. Somehow I pulled 20 pages out of the old grey matter and almost made a real comic(24 pages being the norm, I believe). We finally get to meet Stewart, Ellroy(maybe he'll be back), Miss Haddie(eh). The good thing about this issue was that Stewart was introduced as he plays off Ace and Martin in a way I wasn't expecting and I do have big plans for him and a part-time job he will be getting. For the most part I was pretty satisfied with the issue(yeah Ellroy's a cliche, that's why you probably won't see him again), the whole Harry Potter is alright(people were really complaining like that though) the best part being Martin going on his fantasy girl tangent. The weirdest thing about this issue was that instead of listening to music I was listening to DVD commentaries while I drew it out, one of them being A History of Violence, which brings me to...
...If It Wasn't for Guillermo Del Toro, and David Cronenberg I probably wouldn't step into a movie theater. Eastern Promises had the Cronenberg violence but at least to me didn't have the Cronenberg menace that makes his other movies so strong. I wish he would get back into writing his own movies again.

So here's the plan I like the every other Tuesday schedule thus the next post will be either a painting or a rant that has been building up for awhile, then the following post will be the start of the new stuff.

Tasty Treats #6 The Mental Health Issue, Strange Coincidence #2, and Happy to Report

So yes I did decide to skip Issues 4&5 for now(issue 4 needs it's own space as it is an experiment that failed miserably but does has a pull-out poster(which is good), and a recipe comic with Jake Ace and Martin(which is better), and the rest of the issue is ehh. Anyway we will skip back to 2004, this issue came about from the second story first, for what ever reason this guy I was working with started to sing the Ghostbusters song, then this image popped in my head of him as a kid walking around saying " I ain't afraid of no ghosts". Then I just drove him crazy about it the rest of the day, adding more to it, the bullies, the lunch box, and I even think the Autistic angle(it seems most of my ideas come from acting like a idiot at work, but it also let's me build on something and in this case it was "why the fuck is he singing that stupid song"), but by the time I got home I had the story in my head, paper ghosts and all.

The problem was that I knew the story wasn't long enough, and I had to come up with another story, thus the Jake Ace story which in a word isn't bad but the whole thing came from the idea that on Tuesdays you always get these ads, coupons, and clutter, in your mailbox, and I wanted to add a mailman character and what you see is what you get. Bob isn't a bad character he's fine, but he makes Jake into a good character which is bad. The best parts of the first story are Jake dealing with Hertz lady, the kids, and Martin, the middle just seems to lose it's way, and Bob's crazy rant should have been crazier. No complaints on the Bradley Hess story it pretty much came out how I had it in my head, even got to give some payback to a typing teacher I had. So jump to page 9 if want to read the better story.

Strange Coincidence #2 see April 7, 2007 for #1, I don't know if the scene I saw will be in the movie or if it's a cut scene(it did seem kind of long) but the movie Superbad has a scene(or deleted scene) where the fat kid is telling a story from his youth and he keeps mentioning a Ghostbusters lunch box where he keeps his dirty pictures. For some reason that struck me as odd as I knew that I would be posting this issue, and to see that scene specifically it's crazzee.

7 pages are written of Jake Ace and Crew, no outline, no idea where the story is going, it's already gone off on a tangent, once again resulting from a discussion I had with a co-worker at my present job(except I didn't drive her crazy). Once I have ten pages written I'll start drawing, will try to keep the Tuesday schedule. Enjoy

Back to the Basics, a Pleasant Surprise, and Beating-up Technology

1999 found me back in Cleveland and if it was a chapter in a book it would be titled The Last Big Hurrah(for me at least)-the body was slowing somewhat, but the spirit was still willing to enjoy..well..spirits. But the move back also got the creative juices flowing(that seemed to be the case anytime I moved), the house I moved into had very little painting space so I opted for crayon etchings(see Sept. 1 2006) and it was time for a new comic. I went back to the Jake Ace well and focused on Martin.

I liked this issue, when I finished it I felt the artwork and the writing complimented each other and I was getting comfortable with the characters. I realized that Martin was the funny one and Jake for lack of a better term was the straight-man, a story without Martin is 12 pages of Jake ranting and raving(which is not bad thing),which can get pretty tiring. The "Nurse Ratchet" woman(who does come back in future issues I don't even know if I named her yet)was based on this woman at Hertz who gave some friends and I a real hard time on payment for a rental car-we were told one price when we picked up the car given another price when we dropped it off, she did not offer much help I might as well have been talking to a rock-so here's the payback. Also when I finished this issue I knew there was something off I couldn't quite figure it out, and then my friend pointed out that it should have been one page longer-Martin passes out way to soon, which I agreed with. Maybe I'll add that page one day.

Pleasantly surprised that The Simpsons movie was good actually laugh out loud good. Not great but very good. A lot funnier than any of the recent episodes I have seen, I chalk this up to the writers of the movie as it was a who's who of classic Simpsons writers from pretty much the first nine seasons. It took a minute to register that I was watching them on the big screen but the animation was great without being overdone and they even had a somewhat trippy drug scene. There's my review.

I think I'll will be wrapping up the rest of the Jake Ace Tasty Treats(maybe a painting interjected here and there),this may light a fire under my ass to get the new one sheets started, instead of spending a Saturday night ripping open my cd player only to find that I can't fix it(knowing that any repair shop would tell me to get a new one), and then punching the damn thing so the cd tray doesn't stick out. Why is it that the record player I got when I was sixteen still works and a cd player I got four years ago craps out on me.

ART SHOW-Paintings

I will be part of a show featuring the paintings of Dave Cintron, John Howitt, and Scott Pickering, at the True Art Gallery 410 East 156th Collinwood OH. 216-383-0230. Opening is Saturday July 14th 6-11pm(show will run until August 4th) live music provided by the above named gentlemen. On my end, one painting brings a series to an end and three paintings begin a new series, featuring Giant Monsters(which seem to be making a comeback-The Host, D-War, and a new secret one from the guy that did Alias and does Lost.), so if you wanna see the guy below in full color Come on down.

mini rant-I should watch the Dvd extras or do some reasearch-plus Mystery Issue

I've been trying to reconfigure this thing so that when you click on the image it doesn't fill up the whole screen and you have to shrink it-something I can't figure out if it's on my end or bloggers end, as this only began after switching to the new version and for some reason I find it very very verryyy annoying.

In regards to Children of Men and the scene I talked about last post, I have since found out that it was culled from six takes of the shot and seamlessly put together into one long take. I guess I'll try not to fall asleep during DVD extras, or do some research before making any proclamations of greatness(it still is a great scene though).

Anyway onto Tasty Treats 3a, when I did this issue I still had the idea to have Tasty Treats do different stories with different characters. So here was my attempt to do a children's story starring Dr. Tobor, it is the only issue I had someone read before I finished it. I gave it to some friends and family and pretty much put it away, never really took it around to the record and comic stores and it has been been in limbo since. Looking at it now, it is what it is, I like the artwork and the lettering for me doesn't get better than that. The story is alright, I think when I get sentimental or mushy things tend to fall apart in my stories(it'll happen again in issue 6), so coming next will be issue 3b back to Jake Ace and the crew. I Didn't Realize(or Don't let the kids see this one), and a short rant.

I didn't realize it has been almost a month since the last post, I guess I have(and here comes the short rant) been preoccupied with watching how the oil companies are getting us used to paying $3.00 for a gallon of gas. Which I'm sure is common in many areas of the U.S., and is down right cheap compared to oversea prices. Still I let a Dammit fly loose when I paid $3.29, what was sadder the person who used the pumped before me had only put in $5.00 worth of gas which amounted to little more than a gallon of gas. Unreal.

Anyways if you get the chance check out the movie Children Of Men, there is a scene that starts out so subtle that you really don't realize what's happening until the shit hits the fan-no cuts-one long take-almost dreamlike how the camera moves. A scene I wish I had seen on the big screen. Here is another oldie, and I will try to get back on the 1-2 week schedule. Also expect to see more Tasty Treat issues(even the mysterious 3a issue) as new Jake Ace(one sheets) will begin to pop up here as those run out. ENJOY

As Promised: TASTY TREATS #2

This one was done down in North Carolina, I thought these guys would rotate stories with Jake Ace. That did not happen, and though I still like the image of the two, stories did not really pop into my head. The story here is based on the fact that I had at one time been able to take these long vacations and spend money like a lunatic, which was not happening while living down in North Carolina or now for that matter. This issue I tried to clean up the lettering and the artwork, which I think I succeeded in more or less.
---This is Honest to your God of Choice True: I had just finished the issue, STORY and art were all done when a week or two later I'm watching The Simpsons and there is Krusty on stage doing his act and getting booed. He's getting booed for the same reason Max or Fuller is getting booed for telling old jokes-later in the episode he tries to figure ways to become "hip" kinda like the scene in this issue. Since I had not made any copies yet I was afraid that people would think I stole from The Simpsons which was not the case. This seems to have happened to me a couple of times, most recently I liked the idea of a doorway to another dimension or hell and was planning on doing the a new strip on that, but all of a sudden the Sci-Fi channel had a show like that, and there is some movie coming out with Robert Englund, and a direct to dvd movie, so I stopped thinking about such a strip. Now I have to come up with something else.

Mural long dead and covered

Here's a sketch for a mural that I painted for my friends pizza place. The mural did not get much exposure as it was in the basement on your way to the bathrooms, and my friend closed the place up within six months. A kosher pizza place took over the space, and I assume covered up the mural(there was a shit load of oil paint on that wall though). I wonder what the initial reaction to the mural was, it was the biggest piece I had ever done, took forever for the oil paint to dry. Never got a picture of it as the hallway was too narrow, but the sketch is pretty dead on, think a box of crayons and a coloring book page--Hey for you adventurous types get to it!!

From an old issue of Gank, thought I would put this up in honor of Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth finally making it's way to our small town. I would truly be a happy man if he continued with the Mexican/Spanish small movies, but then I also had a great time watching Blade 2 in the theaters(I liked Hellboy but he really needs to stick with the R rating). I'm not going to spoil anything just let me say this isn't a Disney fairy tale and deserves it's R rating. Enjoy the maze.

I never claimed to be a decent letterer, in fact I would claim to be a horrible letterer. It was the main reason I got out of graphic design(this was before computers, and you had to color in letters in gauche), most of my projects looked like a two year old did it(I really was in my own kind of hell). I can't say my lettering has gotten better but I try a little harder now, but looking back at this issue I can say that it is readable and uhm..well..is readable. It has come into my head to redo this issue, but looking at it now I say it holds up well, the only thing I would change is the cover(which I may still do), following the same design as the issues that follow. So welcome to the world of Jake Ace, Martin, and Bradley Hess, I hope you enjoy.

The mid nineties found me out of Cleveland and moving down to North Carolina. I was still working on Dr. Tobor and began to spread them around Asheville(which amounted to about 3 places). Which lead me to contribute to the free music paper Gank(see October 3, 11, and 23 for examples), for it's entire run. I also applied for the Xeric Foundation, which was a grant that helped fledgling comic book writer/artists self-publish their books. I got all I needed together and sent it out, waited and Dr. Tobor never did make it to the Diamond Distribution Catalog but I pressed on and started the book that I continue to work on today.

The origins of 80 Proof Comix Presents Tasty Treats is really clouded in mystery, as I cannot remember what made me start this one up, or use Jake Ace as the first story. Another puzzler was how Jake Ace went from cranberry juice and chewing gum(see Nov. 3) to whiskey in a flask and cigarettes(see Next Week). This version of Tasty Treats is one story per issue with the idea of rotating the characters each issue, but as it turned out you kind of stick with what's the funniest(at least to me) and the crossing guard crew had the best characters. Except for Issue 4(a failed experiment), I've enjoyed this run and have more or less been able to put out a book a year and will be posting them here as time goes on, and now that I've started this blog thing it maybe nice to start something new in the vein of the Dr. Tobor one sheets.

Lesson 3: Drinkin' and Drawin'

When last we met I was trying to figure out what was going on between 1993-95, well it looks like Dr. Tobor, and the birth of 80 Proof Comix. While Tasty Treats was a stab at some sort of professionalism, Dr. Tobor was born of doodles from the classroom and drunken nights of drawing in my sketchbook which usually had some sort of drunken rant(these type of drunken sketchbook drawings later went on to celebrating the New Year and usually included my album of the year). Now if I remember correctly(which I probably don't as I couldn't remember what I was doing between 93-95), a lot of the comics at the time were autobiographical type books. To me it seemed the Canadians knew how to do it best, they made them funny, thought provoking, and kept the artwork simple but always complimenting the story. But as with anything, for every good one there was at least two or three that came across as whiny-woo as me plus look at the crazy angle I can draw from headaches that they were. I don't need a panel that's looking up your nostril while you complain how crappy your life is because you got the wrong cup of coffee. Anyways the point being is that these books weren't fun, so in a way I knew that what ever I did next my goal was to make it fun which lead to 80 Proof Comix.

80 Proof Comix was a free Bi-monthly-one sheet-with pin-up-created in a sober/drunk mode-which lead to robots-killer robots-blood-some bad lettering-to be continued I was having fun and unlike Tasty Treats and my paintings it was immediate. If I didn't use the name 80 Proof Comix it probably would have been called "One Take Comics" cause that was how it was done, Pen to Paper-no pencil and drawn drunk. This lasted until Issue 7 where pencil started hitting paper, which was still fine as yet again whatever I put down first, stayed that way(unless it was god-awful). Plus I was still having fun with the covers and the pin-ups. The free issues were placed all over Cleveland as well sent out to Quimbys, and See Hear, this lead to receiving some fine comics from Tom Eaton(see link), and Jake Kelly and Stephe Kuchna's Summer Zine. I did a collection for the first six issues, finished the first story arc after I had moved to North Carolina and applied for a Xeric Grant(didn't happen), which leads right into Lesson 4: Skyland

While going through all this stuff I found the second Dr. Tobor story arc all penciled out...HHMMMM

Lesson 2: Tasty Treats

Ah the early nineties, a light and breezy time it seemed creativity was in the air. The Simpsons were on a roll(which really should have stopped somewhere around season 11 or 12-whenever they went to England), my friend was introducing me to the world of Seinfeld(now tainted), there was still city specific music scenes(gone the way of my space and youtube) as well as record labels that specialized in more or less one sound. Fantagraphics gave us Peter Bagge's Hate and Dan Clowe's Eightball. Comic Books were beginning to get the respect they deserve(but only if you called them Graphic Novels), and punk rock fliers went from being plastered every and anywhere to limited edition prints hanging in art galleries. Vinyl was still viable and becoming quite collectible with record singles coming out in every color of the rainbow, sometimes swirled. I was working at a pizza shop and going to school to become a Art Teacher-determined to change how art was taught(HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA That is Funny), so yeah this is the stew that Tasty Treats crawled from.

The name Tasty Treats came from a delivery driver I worked with who had the habit of saying Glenn's Tasty Treats while I was making food, which in turn fit the book as it was an anthology comic. There was an exception though as I did have a continuing story "Knuckleheads" which was never finished(though it still rattles in my brain). There were some recurring character strips, but Knuckleheads and quite a few stories were inspired by the police blotter and Wmji's "Knuckledheads in the News"(Back then it was the Lanigan, Webster, and Malone show, presently The Lanigan and Malone show, Knuckleheads still on Thursday morning 8-9am). It seemed I was on some kind of roll, but Tasty Treats this form at least, stopped by 1992-incidentally the Jake Ace that was posted November 3rd was from the 3rd issue. If you could see how some of this was laid out it looks like a madman did it, pieces here cuts there, artwork was done on bristol board and I was still using rapidograph pens(HAHAHAHA that's funny too). Now I'm just trying to figure out what the hell I was doing between 93-95.

4 months in the making finally it's here, your proper Welcome to 80 Proof Comix so let's begin.
Named after one of my favorite movie series The Thin-Man starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, high society drinkers who solve crime on the side(though Nick is a ex-detective who always seems to run into guys he "sent up the river" and they are always happy to see him). The kind of movies they don't make anymore, dialogue fast and funny, a dog named Asta, all available on DVD-Find them, Watch them, and Enjoy.
The comic did not and I had no intention to capture the tone of the movies. The Thin-Man was a private detective, who didn't use a gun but his brain. Two issues were put out and a third issue was finished but never released. The Thin-Man did receive a nice Christmas card. Thanks

I put The Thin-Man to rest and went on to a horror comic, Bloody Murder, the comics usually had two stories one serious and the other with a little more humor. There was a Crypt-Keeper type character-though looking through the issues I don't think I bothered to name him. Not much to say, it's a horror book-I like it(horror that is), still do(not the torture crap they're peddling today-but I'll save that rant for another day).

But I will say this The cover of Issue 2 is loosely based-influenced by John Carpenter's The Thing, which is a remake of the Howard Hawk's film The Thing from Another World, which is based on the story Who Goes There by John Cambell-Whew.
Now the Hawks film is a classic, I remember it fondly as a kid. But there are certain times in your life when you See something, Hear something, or Read something, that makes your spine tingle and your Brain Turn Upside Down. Carpenter's The Thing did that for me, the story was there and the cast made the chaos, and the horror seem real whether there was a monster on screen or not. But it was the effects in that movie that turned my brain to mush, morphing, tentacle, chest teeth, dogs inside out hell beast animation that was in real time, and the best thing about it was that you knew somewhere that the Norris Spider Head was sitting somewhere in some Hollywood warehouse. The movie did everything a movie should, plus in my case it gave my brain an extra tweak, so when I read that they're planning a remake this was my first thought...
